With the advent of metabolic surgery, the prospect of long-term control of type II diabetes is now here. At present, insurers will only pay for surgery for diabetes when it accompanies morbid obesity. Both hypertension and type II diabetes lower the weight threshold for obesity surgery from a BMI of 40 to 35. All surgery to treat type II diabetes in patients with a BMI of less than 35 must be performed in a research protocol setting and for this reason is not yet freely available.

Dr. Edye is a senior surgeon in the newly formed Division of Metabolic, Endcrine and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mount Sinai, one of the few in the country to be developing protocols for the surgical treament of type II diabetes.

Surgery to treat Type II diabetes is being evaluated in many centers around the world. Watch this space for news of this exciting new devlopment.
